The majority of Westerners believe that leprosy has been consigned to the dustbin of clinical history and has ceased to exist, not so, this virulent disease it still active and blighting many lives. It almost unbelievable, but tens of thousands of new cases of leprosy are diagnosed every year; thankfully there is a cure and if treated in time the patient should show no obvious effects. Those who live in cities and towns know that leprosy can be successfully treated and seek medical help. However, the majority of illiterate who live in rural India or in the mountain villages never have access to doctor or any branch of the medical profession these unfortunate individuals in time and suffer the loss of fingers and hands, or toes and fee; they are shunned by their community and must leave home and some times family and survive by becoming a wandering beggar.
